Signs Of Life In Relegation Battle Despite Sleaford Town Loss

Sleaford Town were left with another narrow defeat on Tuesday night, but there were at least signs of life in a battling display that suggested the fight for survival is far from over.

Sleaford headed to third-placed Coalville Town for a catch-up fixture knowing any sort of result would help ease the pressure at the bottom of the United Counties League Division One table. Instead, they came away empty-handed after a hard-fought 3-2 loss, one that will disappoint Jamie McGhee and his players, but perhaps not discourage them as much as some recent performances might have done.

McGhee once again put himself into the starting line-up, looking to bring some calm and leadership to a side still hovering just above the relegation places. Early on, that decision appeared to have the desired effect. Sleaford began brightly, took the game to their hosts and looked far more front-footed than a team weighed down by the pressure of the run-in.

Their positive start was rewarded on the half-hour mark when Lewis Smith fired them into the lead. At that point, Sleaford looked composed and competitive, and there was every sign they might frustrate a Coalville side with ambitions at the other end of the table.

Unfortunately for the Lincolnshire outfit, the hosts responded quickly. Billy Loomes levelled in the 37th minute before Tom Mangan turned the game on its head just three minutes later. In the space of a few moments, a promising evening had become another uphill struggle, and Sleaford went into the break 2-1 down despite showing more quality and resilience than they have in some recent outings.

To their credit, heads did not drop. Sleaford emerged strongly after half-time and almost found an instant route back into the contest when they struck the crossbar in the 50th minute. The equaliser eventually came 20 minutes from time as Benjamin Zalewski made it 2-2, giving the visitors a deserved reward for their persistence.

That set up a tense finish, with both sides desperate for the points for very different reasons. Coalville pushed hard in search of a winner to strengthen their play-off bid, and in the 84th minute, Mangan struck again to settle the contest.

The result leaves Sleaford just one point above the relegation places, with Pinchbeck United directly below them and the bottom of the table tightening up alarmingly. Still, there was encouragement in the aftermath. McGhee spoke positively about the improvement in performance, and if Sleaford can replicate this level in the final weeks of the season, they will believe survival remains firmly within reach.
