The Bad: Anthony Elding
Anthony Elding wasn’t a bad player, but he just wasn’t for us. He arrived at Lincoln City on loan from Crewe Alexandra in January 2009, with Peter Jackson hoping he could provide the goals his side badly needed. The striker made an encouraging start, scoring on his debut as ten-man City recovered to earn a 2-2 draw with Brentford.
That early promise quickly faded. Elding made another 14 appearances but scored only twice, with the quality he had previously shown at Stevenage Borough and Stockport County rarely evident in an Imps shirt. He was playing in a side short of a coherent attacking plan, but his contribution still fell well below expectations.
Elding later scored regularly for Grimsby Town and Sligo Rovers, although a subsequent five-game loan spell at Preston North End also ended without a goal. When he arrived at Sincil Bank, there were concerns that City would not be able to afford him permanently. By the time he returned to Crewe, few supporters were particularly disappointed that a permanent move was beyond the club’s finances.
