Lincoln City are running a superb competition which is giving fans the opportunity to contribute to a book all about watching the Imps away.
“You’re supposed to be away! On the road with Lincoln City” is the latest Youth Academy Future Imps Fundraiser. It’s a collection of short stories, written by you, charting your experiences of following our wonderful football club up and down the country.
We’ve all got our favourite tales of following the Mighty Imps around the country. There have been good days and great days, bad days and days when you wish the earth would just swallow you up. Whether it’s returning from a 3-1 defeat at Carshalton, or a 3-2 win over Forest Green, travelling away with City creates stories and memories. This season we’ve seen cup shocks and great atmospheres, but going further back in time there are plenty of cold, lonely nights on the terraces when everyone else had obviously stayed at home watching Emmerdale.
The Imps are looking for your stories of between 1,000 and 7,500 words which capture the magic of being on the road following Lincoln City. They can be about a particular match or the journey or trip as a whole. Did you have an unforgettable day or weekend away? Did everything that could go wrong go wrong? It doesn’t have to be the epic trips that everyone remembers, perhaps the 2-0 win at Wrexham in October 2001 stands out for you? They can be happy memories, sad memories or just poignant reflections on being a football fan. What is important is that they recollect travelling away with Lincoln, and together they’ll form part of an unmissable book that is raising money for the Future Imps Fund.
Don’t just write a match report though, that isn’t what the book is about: we want to hear about the whole experience of following The Imps on the road. The more different and interesting the better!
If you have any photos to go with your story that would be great. They can be scanned and emailed to the address below or posted to Roger Bates, Lincoln City Youth Academy, Sincil Bank, Lincoln, LN5 8LD. Please include a postal address if you want the photos returned.
The best 20 or so stories will be included in the book. Here’s the kicker for me: I’ll be on the panel of judges. I’ll be joined by Alan Johnson (journalist for the Non-League Paper and Lincolnshire Echo to name a few) and Ian Plenderleith (author of the excellent Rock ‘n’ Roll Soccer) and between us we’ll be responsible for selecting the very best stories you have to tell.
We appreciate they won’t all be set against the backdrop of 9,000 fans at The Emirates, and we’d hope not too. We’re looking for those amusing and touching stories that really sum up what it means to be a fan of a lower league football club, the stories that capture the motivation behind four hundred mile round trips for mid-table League Two clashes. We want your words to express how we feel, and how every other fan feels when travelling to watch the Imps.
The authors of all the stories published will receive a complimentary copy of the book signed by the City management team of Danny and Nicky Cowley, be invited to a Lincoln City home game as VIP guests of the club and also be our guests at the launch event.
