Swindon move for Steve Evans

It’s being reported in the Swindon local press that the Robins have made an official approach for Mansfield Town manager and Dangermouse extra, Steve Evans.

They’ve been denying a desire to take him to the County Ground, and only last week he was promised more money than the other kids to fund his belief that he isn’t a League Two manager. One wonders if the lure of managing a slightly bigger club might sway his head?

Swindon parted company with former head coach Luke Williams earlier this month and want to move quickly, but Mansfield chairman John Radford has reportedly rejected the approach.

Evans is currently on a long with the Stags, with two years remaining on his current deal. That won’t be cheap to buy out, and according to reports he could be in line for a large bonus should he steer Mansfield to League One. We already know that when it comes to the dislikeable 54-year old Scot, money talks.

Lee Power

The driving force behind trying to recruit Evans is Swindon chairman Lee Power.  He’s a former Norwich striker who joined Boston United whilst Evans was the manager. Despite him not being an appreciated figure in the wider world of football, those who have worked with Evans talk of him favourable, apart from Ken Charlery probably.

Although there are reasons Evans wouldn’t want to go, and reasons why he might cost a lot of money, Lee Power means business this season. Relegation will have hit the Robins hard, and he wants to move quickly and decisively to change things around. He wants to appoint a new manager by the end of this week, and he’s already spoken the language of Evans by mentioning things such as ‘a sizeable budget to work with’ and ‘100 per cent control of the club’s recruitment policy’. Are the wheels going to come off Mansfield’s season before this one has even properly finished?

Either way we’ll get to see our favourite manager at Sincil Bank next season. It’s lining up to be a cracker, what with Evans and of course the King of Smug himself, Mr flowing-football and the biggest idiot in the village Mark Cooper.
