This morning City have been linked with a ‘late move’ to try to bring highly rated centre back Sam Hughes to Sincil Bank. The Chester Chronicle have labelled the move as audacious, and here’s why.
Hughes is hot property, possibly hotter than Sean Raggett was last season. He was the subject of a failed £80,000 bid from Barnsley earlier in the year, and they’re just one of the sides thought to be after the 20-year old defender.
Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and us are also in the hunt, along with Crystal Palace, Burnley and Aston Villa. I’m sure there are plenty of other monitoring his progress too. The reason our move has been labelled as audacious is that if he had arrived at Sincil Bank it would have been a massive coup for all involved.
Unfortunately it seems Hughes has agreed a deal with an unnamed team, and the news will break later today on who that is. It seems the only discussion now is on a transfer fee, with both sides hoping to avoid a tribunal decision.
I imagine the impending departure of Sean Raggett has left Danny thinking about another centre-half, even with the news about Callum this morning. Perhaps we’ve entered the race late as we’re trying to move quickly to fill a Raggett sized hole, but I suspect we’ll be looking at players who have been released, rather than those attracting Premier League interest.
Hughes can operate at full-back as well as in the middle, and he’s come up through the Chester youth ranks. He spent time out on loan at Witton Albion 18 months ago, and since his return his value has rocketed. Expect news on him later today, but unless a miracle happens it won’t be news of a move to Sincil Bank.
