Former Imp Simmons Joins Frecklington’s Trinity

Recently released Imps forward Alex Simmons has signed for Gainsborough Trinity, returning to the National League North where he scored eight times for Halifax last season.

Simmons spent ten years at City, coming up through the youth ranks after joining as an 11-year old. He went on to start six league games for City, and he came of the bench on 22 other occasions. In 2015/16 he scored twice, in the 3-1 defeat at Forest Green and in the 3-1 home win over Boreham Wood.

After Danny and Nicky joined the club, Simmons found a place on the bench hard to come by. He played in the 6-1 win against North Ferriby early in the season before joining Halifax for a successful loan spell. A spell at Boston wasn’t as fruitful, and he came back to Sincil Bank to make a brief cameo in the 0-0 draw at Maidstone before being released in the summer.

Trinity only just avoided relegation out of the National League North this season, a 5-1 final day defeat wasn’t enough to send them down after Worcester failed to overcome champions Fylde. Former Imps youth Dave Frecklington is in charge there having taken over from Dom Roma towards the end of a troublesome season.

Simmons joins another ex-Imp, Shane Clarke, who joins up after an injury hit spell at Boston United. Clarke played 74 times for City between 2006 and 2010 before moving to Gateshead and later Tamworth.

The pair one just two of eight new players that Freck has brought to the club, looking to halt the slide down the table. Remember, in 2012 they were finalists in the play-offs, losing out to Nuneaton by a solitary goal. They haven’t been able to ascend those heights since, and after parting company with Steve Housham last summer they were unable to find success. Dave Frecklington on the other hand, he had a successful spell with Spalding and was a popular choice to take over at the Northolme.

Simmons told the Echo last week that he wanted to move wherever would be ‘best for his football’, and he obviously sees signs of recovery as Freck is able to build his own squad.

Best of luck to him and Shane next season.
