The Stacey West XI – Centre Backs Winner

Paul Morgan (116 votes) and Sean Raggett (73 votes)

What a pairing this would have been. There’s a few years between the two, but Paul Morgan and Sean Raggett would have complimented each other superbly at the back in any side. Raggs with his aerial ability, his knack of finding the fright position and of course, his threat at the other end. Coupled with Morgan’s awareness, turn of pace and distribution skills, they might just make a perfect pairing.

Sean Raggett still has the story of his career to write, currently at Norwich and awaiting his big chance. It was nice to see him at Wembley, especially as his goal against Accrington helped ensure we were there in the first place. He could yet go on to become a Premier League player, although his chance might come via a loan with a League One club next season. there’s no saying that won’t be us, but of course that could just be a Lincoln fan living in the past. what I do know is this: Sean Raggett is as good as we’ve had since Keith left us in 2006.

One player who remained throughout Keith’s tenure was Paul Morgan and I still maintain he was the most underrated player of the period. He was a truly gifted centre half, schooled under David Moyes at Preston and constantly monitored by the Everton boss. I remember once seeing Moyes in Waitrose in Lincoln before game a game, I was utterly convinced that Captain Morgan was going to leave us. perhaps his relatively small stature held him back, grossly unfair on a fine footballer.

Paul Morgan perfectly timed every tackle, his pace was tremendous at times and his reading of the game helped make average defenders such as Ben Futcher look good. It’s often spoken about how good our team under Keith was, how it was far greater than the sum of its parts. In order to be that you need a leader, an effective communicator and organiser and I firmly believe that was Paul Morgan. He played in every one of our five play off campaigns, when he left we didn’t finish top seven again. read into that what you will.

I believe that he’s better than his countryman and one of the winners, but then what do I know?

Mate, if you want his shirt just ask. He’s a decent guy, he’ll let you have it.
