Imps linked with former Norwich & Scunthorpe full back

A perceived reliable Twitter account has linked City with former Norwich and Millwall full back Harry Toffollo.

The ‘Ex Agent’ account has been widely followed recently with a few accurate tit bits and, if he’s accurate here as well, then we could be on to a good thing.

22-year old Toffollo has recently been released by Millwall having come through the Norwich academy. He’s a left-sided defender, a position we lacked all last season. He’s more comfortable playing advanced in a left wing back role, but can be deployed as a standard left back too.

He has had loan spells at Scunthorpe, Swindon and Doncaster and appears very comfortable in League One football. Indeed, discussing his potential Imps move on twitter, many Swindon fans were very disappointed he wasn’t being linked with them having particularly impressed whilst on loan at the County Ground.

The defender has represented England up to Under 20 level and has amassed 77 first team appearances on loan at different clubs, all in League One. On the face of it, a move to City seems unlikely as he’s clearly got plenty of pedigree, but Danny will only bring players to the club who ‘improve the current squad’, so any left-sided defender is going to have to be equal to or better than Sam Habergham. It certainly sounds as though Sam will have a fight on his hands, should we be interested in Toffollo.

It would make sense, we had just three full backs all last season and assuming Sean Long signs his new deal we would still need left back cover. Neal Eardley is quality but is definitely better on the right, with James Wilson able to fill in there too, albeit unconvincingly. However, we’ve struggled for left-sided cover for two seasons now, Riccardo Calder came in at the end of the 2016/17 season, but a swoop for Toffollo would be the first serious move to bring competition to Sam, ironically also a former Norwich trainee.

  1. It appears you are not convinced about Wilson, Gary? He is mainly a central defender and looks ready made for our team.
Getting a left back is a priority though as Sam (Mr consistent the season before) struggled through last year for fitness and quality of crosses was nowhere near as good as Eardley.

  2. I don’t think we have seen enough of Wilson at centre half to say that he is ready made for the team.I also think that Sam will be reasonable cover at left back next season but we need a bit more quality in that position if we are to push on.

  3. Toffolo (at least you could spell his name correctly) has a lot of potential, but he needs to be given a left side attacking wingback remit. Lincoln would be a good fit and the management style would only bring him up to his full potential. He’d also fit into the side both as an attacking left back, offering competition to Sam Habergham, but also perhaps in a solid left-side pairing playing in front of Sam, where Harry’s higher pressing style and his superior attacking and crossing skills could offer real creative opportunities from the left.
