Harry Toffolo signs two-year Imps deal

The Imps have secured a deal for former England U20 left back Harry Toffolo on a two-year deal.

The defender spent most of his career at Norwich City, signing as an Under-14 in 2008. He is regarded as a solid left-sided defender with an inclination to get into advanced attacking positions.

After two years with Norwich’s academy, Toffolo was called up to the England Under-18 squad for the clash against Belgium in March 2013. In August 2014 he was on the bench for Norwich in the Capital One Cup win over Crawley.

In October 2014 he was loaned to Swindon Town, initially for a month but later extended to the end of the season due to his good form. He was a huge hit at the County Ground and his form saw him called up into the England Under-20 squad. He made his three lions debut in a win against the USA. He helped Swindon to the play off final, appearing at Wembley as they lost to Preston.

Much was expected the following season and he made his Norwich first team debut in August 2015 in a 2-1 League Cup win at Rotherham.

In October 2015 he was on international duty yet again, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win over Holland.

In October 2015, he was loaned to Rotherham on a one month loan deal, again extended until January 2016 but he made just seven appearances for the Millers. After returning to Norwich, he was loaned to Peterborough in January 2016 until the end of the seadon.

He was then surprisingly loaned to our County rivals Scunthorpe in August 2016. He made his Iron debut in a 4-0 win over Southend on 10th September and once again impressed in the third tier.

Norwich activated a one year extension to his deal in May 2017, loaned Toffolo out again to Doncaster Rovers. Injury ended his loan early, with Toffolo having played 17 games for Rovers.

On 29th January 2018, Toffolo was released by Norwich, joining Championship side Millwall on a free transfer. He was then released on 18th May 2018 without making a single first team appearance.

His capture is something of a coup for City, with Swindon fans certainly jealous a player of his calibre has chosen Lincoln City.

Danny Cowley said: “He’s a 22-year-old who already has vast experience having played in the Championship and League One, while doing very well in those loan spells away from Norwich.”

“He was a big part of Norwich’s team that won the FA Youth Cup, and he’s a really bright young player with a fantastic future in the game ahead of him. To have 10 England Youth caps, it shows we’ve got one of the best left backs at his age.”

“He had lots of options, and lots of offers in League One, and the fact he’s trusted us to continue his development is something we should be really pleased about.”

The defender, who turns 23 in August, is delighted to make the move to Sincil Bank and can’t wait to get started.

“It’s exciting, it’s a club that once you’re given an opportunity from, everyone would say yes,” Toffolo said.

“The first thing Danny Cowley said to me was that coming to Lincoln would give me the opportunity to play in front of 10,000 people, and to do that with Lincoln City is fantastic.”

“The focus is on Lincoln City, and you don’t understand how much I’m relishing this opportunity. I want to be part of it.”

More reaction later, specifically once I’ve finished my tour of Alnwick Gardens!
