Imps face opposition in hunt for Spanish star Luque

Two unnamed League Two clubs have bid for Juan Luque, the trialist who has spent all of pre-season at Sincil Bank.

26-year old Luque has been with City for a month now, looking to impress Danny Cowley. The latest news is that two clubs have now put in a bid for Luque, who is contracted to Isthmian North side Heybridge Swifts.

Danny has spoken to the Lincolnshire Echo of his admiration for Luque, who only came into the English game a year ago from Spain.

“He’s done really well, I’ve been impressed with him throughout pre-season,” reported Lincolnshire Live. “Technically, he’s an excellent footballer, he has a real calmness and composure and can execute under pressure. He’s really good around the goal and has good technical quality with his finishing.”

Luque, who was on the books of Barcelona as a child, has shown his potential with a series of displays which have caught fans’ eyes, as well as that of another League Two team. He featured against Blackburn, Norwich, Hull and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as Derby U23s and in the recent Doncaster Rovers friendly.

Despite the added interest, it seems to be the Imps at the head of the queue with a solid relationship already in place. Both Heybridge Swifts and Luque himself have retweeted a recent article speculating as to whether he will earn himself a deal or not.

Rumours that the other club interested are Grimsby Town are thought to be nothing more than that, just mindless internet speculation by some kid in his bedroom pretending to be a football agent to cause mischief.

The Imps are looking to add two or three new faces before the transfer window closes, with extra pressure now on to find a centre back after captain Luke Waterfall departed for Shrewsbury.

Luque has been tipped to succeed in the Football League, in a chat I had with a Heybridge fan recently I was told he has ‘definitely got what it takes’ to be a success in English football.

Any move for Luque would have to be completed in the next 24 hours as the transfer window closes at 5pm tomorrow.
