Seven questions we asked a Crawley Town fan

Huge thanks go to Jonathan and Ewan of Straight Red CTFC Podcast for being the next subjects of our seven questions feature. Without further ado, on with the show!

1. It’s been a crazy week or two for you guys. Any preferences or thoughts on potential new managers?

As much as Filipe has coaching experience, has been taking things seriously and has enjoyed his time coaching, he’s made it clear that he wants to help Crawley on the pitch – so I don’t think it’ll be him or Jimmy. I honestly don’t mind who the new manager is, I just want them to have a real passion for seeing Crawley succeed and not using the club as a springboard to getting themselves back on the radar and moving to a ‘bigger club’ in a years time. We need someone who will stick about.

2. How do you feel the season has started and what are your hopes going forward?

The season started pretty frustratingly as Reds were stubborn and stuck to their idea of passing down the wings and crossing in even when the opposition have clearly sussed that out. Having said that, there have been some absolute cracking matches at the Broadfield (2-2 v Swindon and 3-2 v Bury) and the boys have shown real courage and strength to come back from losing positions and for many HK’s style of football is new to them (we’ve had nearly a whole new squad in) and so it’ll naturally take them time to adjust to a new mentality and new surroundings.

3. Harry Kewell – discuss

I kind of admired the guy, I have to give credit to him for sticking to his game plan as it did begin to yield results. Having said that he did frustrate me a little as he sometimes seemed so oblivious to how easy we were to read and I would argue he is playing a style of football that will get you places in League 1/The Championship… League 2 is a little more scrappy and sometimes, to get results, you’ve gotta do that. I’m sad to see him go, he was a respectable guy and it hurts a little bit more seeing as he left to a fellow League 2 team.

4. Which player would you mark out as the real dangerman for city to keep an eye on this weekend?

Ollie Palmer has developed a real coolness in front of goal and has the physicality to also take on players. But for me, Ashley Nathaniel-George has been a real firecracker and his pace, agility and attacking eye has caused an issue for a lot of teams.

5. What are your honest perceptions of the Imps, as a club as well as on the field?

Like Ewan I think their crest is pretty cool – Lincoln seem to have a real team spirit and be in the midst of a really good run of form – more impressive being that its the start of the season. Jason Shackell I feel is a defender I’ve always thought of as solid whenever I’ve seen him in the league and of course you have a Crawley big name in John Akinde – fondly remembered for his lack of goal scoring ability.

6. Who is your all-time Crawley hero and why?

For me, Dannie Bulman. Absolute machine and workhorse. He’s here for his third stint at the club and played an integral part in the Conference winning and FA Cup Fifth-round teams during a golden period for Crawley. He always gives 110% and you can see his heart is in the club, he keeps a cool head and nits an ever-changing midfield together well. He shows that age is just a number.

7. Finally, what can Lincoln fans expect to see this weekend, in terms of style and approach?

You can probably expect to see fullbacks that like to push up the field, quite a few crosses and wing play. We seem to have a habit of passing the ball back to our goalkeeper a lot (sometimes that’s cost us the lead) and we have some fast and agile midfielders that will likely break at speed if given the space.
