Two out and one more to follow: January remodelling continues

Two more players have departed Lincoln City this week, with one more to follow imminently.

Derby County wide man Kellan Gordon has come to the end of his loan deal and returns to Pride Park. Gordon was perhaps one who looked to have more than he was allowed to show, scoring goals against both Forest Green and Mansfield. He didn’t impress against Cambridge over Christmas thought and was never likely to get a game at right back.

I’m gutted, the Stacey West only sponsored his shirt on Saturday so now we’re waiting for news on who that will transfer too! It seems we’re a curse here, having had pictures of Luke Waterfall, Matt Green, Elliott Whitehouse, Nathan Arnold, Paul Farman and Alex Woodyard on our walls, as well as sponsoring Matt Green and two seasons ago Richard Walton.

The next player on his way out of the club is Bernard Mensah. The Bristol Rovers man didn’t impress in his first few outings for the club, despite seemingly being a higher standard than some of our other wingers. It goes to serve as a warning for anyone thinking of coming out of the National League, a move two divisions up might look attractive, but rarely does it work. Our own Bruno Andrade move up one division and was far more effective than Mensah.

I would liked to have seen more of the Gas man, but he’s immediately been loaned back out to Aldershot. I’m not quite sure how that works, he appeared for Bristol Rovers on the opening day of the season and played for us in the league, my understanding was he’d therefore not be able to play for anyone else. I guess he must be able to though, they wouldn’t make such a basic mistake as that.

I would tentatively say that he’s going back to a level that suits him, having seen him in action for us.

Between them, those two players had ten outings for the club in the league, all from the bench. Mensah had four, Gordon six and of the two, it’s Gordon I’m most sad to see the back off, mainly because we invested near on £300 in him, but also as I think he could have added to our run in.

The final player set to depart is Scott Wharton, he’s likely to be going back to Blackburn and then out to another club. I think the final straw for Scott came this weekend when Shackell dropped out of the side and instead of turning to the back up left-sided defender, Cian Bolger dropped in. Scott is suffering from us being able to attract very high quality players at centre half and sadly his departure is inevitable.

Scott has 11 outings for us this season, five starts and six more from the bench, with a goal too. That came in the 6-2 win at Port Vale, arguably his best outing this season in an Imps shirt.

It’s interesting though because at present Tony Mowbray has said discussions are in place between us, Blackburn and a third-party over his next loan move. What possible say can we have in it? Unless we paid a loan fee perhaps? it will be interesting to hear if Rob Makepeace raises that issue in the press conference later in the week.

By my county that puts us onto a squad of 19, including Sam Habergham, the two keepers and the new loan faces. On the subject of Sam I’ve seen him around the ground recently so he hasn’t simply disappeared. I really feel for him, he must be going through utter hell with his injury and I’d like to think no matter what happens this season, he’s given a deal next year to prove his worth to the squad.
