The Imps exciting youth prospect Tim Akinola joined Lincoln United on loan recently, making his debut this weekend against Spalding United.
The Whites have lost ground on the race for a play-off spot in the Evo-stick East Division One, but found a way past their country rivals to register a 2-1 victory. that came in no small part thanks to a commanding display from Akinola in the centre of the park.
Fans travelling to the FA youth Cup match against west Brom reported that Akinola put in a ‘Kante’ type performance for the Under 18 side, tough tackling in the middle of the park with strong distribution too. He’s now set to get some senior experience with Sam Wilkinson’s side and our man Alan Spencer was at the game to give a view of Akinola’s performance.
He earned the Man of the Match award after his display at Ashby Avenue and if that level of endeavour is shown every week, the Whites could find themselves being pushed towards an unlikely play-off push.
Akinola was involved early on, putting himself about in the fifth minute with a strong tackle that earned a booking. Alan said; “Any other player may have got the jitters but he didn’t he battled on, always looking for the right pass.”
“He got took out frequently whilst shielding the ball and passing it. He kept picking himself up, wanting the ball, head up all the time. Amazing attitude for a young man.”
“He always looked for the simple easy ball and created the space to do so to get others into the game. He brought the Whites’ wide players into the match too. You can see the Cowley stamp all over him with his attitude and work rate.”
Alan has watched Akinola play three times now, including games for the Under 18s and he’s been impressed on every occasion with the combative midfielder.
“If he doesn’t make it in the game, I’ll be shocked.”
Akinola is another of the tremendously talented boys emerging from the current youth set up. Ellis Chapman is already a first team player and Jordan Adebayo-Smith has also made his first team debut.
If Tim Akinola continues to perform to the levels he’s shown in his first game for Lincoln United, he’ll soon be knocking on the first team door too.
