SW Player Review 2018/19 – The Keepers

Josh Vickers

Before we get started, let me state this as my opinion; Josh Vickers could play top flight football. Remember, he’s only 23 and has shown himself to be an excellent shot stopper and to have good command of his area.

Should we expect anything less though? He came through the ranks at Arsenal and will have had lots of top flight coaching as a young man. He may be young with plenty to learn, but at 23 he still has 15 years of football left in him.

An outfield player usually gets until he 32 perhaps, then the decline starts, but a keeper can easily play into his forties if he keeps fit….

Ah. If he keeps fit. Josh Vickers’ horcrux, his Achilles heel. He can’t stay fit.

It’s heart-breaking to witness the struggles the giant keeper is experiencing. He was brought to the club surely with a view to making the number one shirt his own and dare I say it, had he stayed fit all season we might just have had more points than we do right now.

He’s struggled though and that’s a real shame. Is there a future for him at the club? You’d hope so, but if he can’t prove his long-term fitness then it could be a real problem.

Up until Matt Gilks arrived, Josh was the number one. If Gilks remains next season, he might find his football even more limited than he has this season.

  1. Well reviewed. The stop Gills made at Morecambe broke them, at least three of their players put there hands up high in recognition that they had scored only for Matt to push the ball away at the foot of the post.

    • Allegedly 10’000 odd MKDons fans did the same on Saturday from Anekes header at the death….

  2. Totally agree with views on Smith. Next season will be make or break for Vickers I think, but only regarding his fitness. Gilks has been inspirational.

  3. If we retain Gilks as number one choice for next season then it may be more prudent to loan out Vickers, so he s given ample game time and opportunity to prove his fitness. I believe Smith is good enough to provide us cover while Vickers would be on loan, with option to recall.
