Matt Gilks

We all looked to the transfer window for inspiration up front. The usual ‘which big striker are we signing’ debate went off as the deadline closed, with fans angry that we hadn’t aimed higher. It was all pantomime of course, Danny’s recruitment has widely proven to be excellent and once again, it proved to be.
Capturing Gilks didn’t raise too many eyebrows. Sure, he’s played for Scotland and spent time with Rangers, but he was coming in as cover, right? Okay, he’d played for Scunthorpe last season, but Sam Slocombe had been with Bristol Rovers and he was never anything more than back up to the back up.
What we’ve actually got with Gilks is a wonderful keeper. You’ll read about his dedication and application in the programme this weekend, but his overall impact has been unreal. He rarely concedes from open play, that’s the benefit of having a good defence, but when he is called upon he’s excellent. he makes certain saves look routine, the stop early on against MK Dons being typical.
When really tested though, he’s outstanding. The stop from Chuks Aneke was enough to win us the game and he pulled a similar one off against Macclesfield as well. Strikers score goals and get you promoted, but keepers stopping them is often overlooked.
He came in at just the right time and has been a key figure in our excellent form holding off the chasing pack.
If (When) we lift the title, this man’s contribution should not be under-estimated.

Well reviewed. The stop Gills made at Morecambe broke them, at least three of their players put there hands up high in recognition that they had scored only for Matt to push the ball away at the foot of the post.
Allegedly 10’000 odd MKDons fans did the same on Saturday from Anekes header at the death….
Totally agree with views on Smith. Next season will be make or break for Vickers I think, but only regarding his fitness. Gilks has been inspirational.
If we retain Gilks as number one choice for next season then it may be more prudent to loan out Vickers, so he s given ample game time and opportunity to prove his fitness. I believe Smith is good enough to provide us cover while Vickers would be on loan, with option to recall.
