This weekend has (sadly) been dominated by the fears that Danny and Nicky might be on their way to either West Brom or Boro.
I’ve been forced to write about it and if I had a quid for every DM I’d been sent this weekend, I could buy several copies of my new book (available to pre-order now by the way…).
It’s a situation I find even tougher to deal with thanks to social media with utter morons going on Facebook ‘fishing’, which basically means telling lies to get other people upset. Then, when other people get upset they take pleasure in ‘catching’ people. That’s apparently a hobby of some these days.
If that’s something you enjoy, you need to get out more. Much more.
All weekend those ‘in the know’ have been confirming what they ‘know’, one way or another. The general fear has been sparked by bookies odd, always a reliable source of news (sense the tone). That, coupled with one journalist breaking the news has had some in meltdown.
This morning, the complexion of both jobs has changed and there are fresh names in the frame. I thought it only fair and right to bring you that latest news, just to hopefully stop the DM’s and maybe stop people asking Danny if he’s going at functions, which I’d wager he’s already sick of but is too polite to say.
West Brom’s candidate list has been revealed in more detail, with Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill being considered, along with Charlton’s Lee Bowyer. Both would be relatively good appointments, but it’s the appearance of Bowyer’s name that should give Imps’ fans a bit of comfort.
For those who like odds, it seems Danny’s are drifting on Oddschecker.
Bowyer has done an excellent job with the Addicks since taking over. Karl Robinson struggled to put them in the top six last season and bailed before he failed, but Bowyer took over and made the play-offs. They were beaten over two legs by Shrewsbury, but this season have kicked on and finished third, beating Doncaster in the semi-finals and now awaiting the final with Sunderland.
More importantly, Bowyer is out of contract next season as are at least two of his key players; players that West Brom would find very attractive. Joe Aribo might be too ambitious, but Patrick Bauer speaks highly of Bowyer and would surely jump at the chance to follow the former Leeds man to the Hawthorns.
Also, for those who like odds, it seems Danny’s are drifting on Oddschecker, although he still the favourite. No doubt the fishermen will spin that one.
Over at Boro there’s a change of emphasis as well. Again, Danny was linked but there’s a new name in the frame; Gabriel Batistuta.
I can’t believe this for one second, but alongside Jonathan Woodgate is the former Argentina striker, reported by the Hartlepool Mail as expressing an interest in taking over on Teesside.
He’s not in the betting with Oddschecker but guess what; as of this morning Danny’s odds are drifting once more. Woodgate is the clear favourite, Hughton is up there too but those who like to believe bookies are reliable will see Danny waning in both markets.
It means nothing, not really, but given the furore over the last few days, I felt it prudent to keep you all informed on the other candidates and what the papers are saying, including the ever-reliable Sun….
