Best of Loans Part 1 – ‘They ended up signing’

What to say about young Harry, one of our key players right now? It’s easy to forget he came in on loan as a jewel from Peterborough’s youth setup looking to help us to the National League title. Who would have thought the youngster who came on as we lost 1-0 at Dagenham would go on to lift three trophies with the club and become our longest-serving player in the process?

Harry had two spells at Lincoln in the 2016/17 season, and it was hard to work out which one was more productive. Certainly when he first arrived he added a different dimension to our attack, he brought a goal threat from the opposite wing to Nathan Arnold and gave us real options going forward. Goals at Wrexham and Bromley were vital in the early stages of that superb unbeaten run, but his all-round displays were eye-catching. Barry Fry came to watch his player a couple of times, and each time he put on a real display for his parent club before returning.

He made his second Lincoln debut as a 73rd-minute sub for Terry Hawkridge as we beat Forest Green 3-1 at the Bank, and just a couple of matches later he was back amongst the goals. He grabbed two in a week, one that beat Chester 1-0 and a second to pull us level in the vital match at home to Torquay. He helped us to the title, no doubt about that.

There was joy when he signed a permanent deal with us in the summer of 2017 and he’s gone on to amass almost 130 appearances, with 20 goals. Still only 23, he’s got his best years ahead of him and has become a part of Lincoln City legend for his service, his bullish runs and his likeable demeanour.

  1. Re Jae Martin: ‘Perhaps John Beck didn’t know how to spot a player after all.’. And perhaps the supporters didn’t either – I well remember the chants of “sign him up!”

  2. I had completely forgotten how the Marcus Richardson signing ended up, well I remember Toner but had forgotten it was Richardson. That was a dark day for the club
