Four Years On: National League Team Part II

Callum Howe

Callum Howe always struck me as an unlucky player, kept out of the side by the superb form of Waterfall and Raggett. He was loaned out for the first part of the season, enjoying some good form at Southport and even making club captain, before he returned to the Imps to fight for a first-team place. He arrived back in November, and got a couple of matches thanks to a Raggett injury, and then his suspension. Sadly, for Callum, he struggled for matches after that and ended up appearing eight times in total.

He was loaned out following our promotion to the Football League, this time to Eastleigh, where he was again made club captain. He didn’t play for City again, once he returned to Sincil Bank he was sold to Port Vale for an undisclosed fee. After just one start in the Football League for the Valiants, he was sold to Harrogate Town, whom he helped to the play-offs in the National League. Most recently, he has been playing for Solihull Moors although he has spent much of the current campaign injured.

What a story Jonny Margetts wrote in 2016/17. Signed after a successful trial, he smashed four goals against Southport and was sold before the end of August. Seven games, five goals and in came Scunthorpe United with a fee. It wasn’t ideal in terms of losing a key player, but it was good business for the club. Hilariously, when he didn’t break through at Scunthorpe, they loaned him to Crewe, only to learn he couldn’t play for his new club as he had already represented two clubs, us and the Iron. They climbed down and he came back to the Bank, playing three times. One of those games was away at Arsenal in the FA Cup – quite an occasion for a loan player!

I always liked Jonny, not least because his middle name was Gary, but also because he always had a smile on his face. Since leaving Scunthorpe he’s travelled the non-league scene with spells at Boston, Gainsborough, Matlock and Tadcaster. He’s currently a teammate of Lee Frecklington at Frickley.

Jamie McCombe

Jamie played more than you might think in the National League – he started twice and came off the bench four times in the opening six fixtures. After that, the squad settled down and he was seen a bit from the bench, getting minutes against Oldham, Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley in the FA Cup, as well as a late cameo as we beat Tranmere in the league. In 2018/19 he appeared twice in the EFL Trophy, even scoring in his final professional appearance against Accrington. When Danny Cowley left the club, he was appointed caretaker manager, but left the Imps in January 2020.
