My Favourite Five Pre-Season Friendlies

I daren’t ask how this came about, and it certainly isn’t the game that caught my attention. The result, if I recall, was 0-0 and the whole evening was entirely uneventful. I might be wrong, but I think I had a new mascot head too, which meant incredible discomfort whilst it moulded around my skull.

The reason I’ve picked this is that it stands out as one of those odd fixtures that you can’t quite figure out. In my lifetime I recall Torpedo Moscow coming to the Bank (in February I think), as well as a Romanian side called Otelul Galati. They’re matches you don’t expect, that you probably attend more out of curiosity than anything. This was one of those matches, not least because I do know my European football teams.

They had finished as runner up in the European Cup Winner’s Cup in the seventies, something I knew from spending my childhood flicking through outdated football annuals picked up at car boot sales. In my eyes, they were a big deal. They had been Hungarian champions twice in the previous 12 years, and in recent times they’ve managed to win their division three years on the spin. I’ve still no idea how they ever ended up at Sincil Bank.

As a note of interest, this was Paul Connor’s first appearance in a City shirt, which is why the ‘nil’ part of our scoreline isn’t all that surprising.
