Could this be the most interesting Imps starting XI of the season?
The EFL Trophy game against Man Utd kids isn’t exactly the game of the season for fans, but we know for one young man it is going to be a huge occasion – Sam Long is due to make his debut for the Imps. That’s one aspect of this maligned competition that I do like – it gives young players a chance to appear in the first team. Last season, we saw Hayden Cann get his debut, and in the past, the likes of Lee Frecklington and Ellis Chapman were given their first appearances in Imps colours.
Who else will join Sam Long in the side? We’ll start with the youngster, as I work my way through a suggested starting XI.
Sam Long

This is a bit obvious, I’ve already stated it above, but Sam Long will make his Imps debut this evening. Michael has spoken of him going out on loan in the coming weeks, if we bring one in, but this will be validation for his recent efforts. It could be a big night for the academy graduate.
TJ Eyoma

I fancy TJ to start tomorrow evening, for some match fitness. Michael thinks he’s a robust character, we know that of him anyway, and to get maybe 60 minutes under his belt could leave him in the first-team plans for the weekend. I’ve picked him at right back to give Regan Poole a rest, and I wonder if Michael might do the same.
Max Melbourne

Let’s be honest, whilst Max has done well this season, he will have to do very well to keep his place once everyone is fit. Michael has been fair and kept him in the side despite Lewis getting back to fitness, and I think he’ll partner his potential replacement tomorrow. Joe Walsh obviously won’t play, and I suspect we’ll rest Adam Jackson. That doesn’t leave many options, and I think Max will be given another chance to shine. He’s done okay so far, after all.
