Wycombe and Lincoln: A Short But Lively History

Wycombe 2-2 Imps 2017

This game isn’t about the result, it was about the feeling. Six years we were out of the Football League, six long years. There was a time when I thought we’d never come back, genuinely. I feared we’d be stuck with Salisbury, Telford and Bromley for the rest of our days. Then came 2016/17, a season where I’d lay awake a night wondering how it would feel if we ever were a Football League club again.

This was the moment we found out exactly how it would feel. I recall standing at the back of the stand as the teams came out, and feeling more emotional hearing ‘welcome to the League Two clash between….’ than I had when we walked out at Arsenal. This was the homecoming, this was the moment we’d waited for, and it’s why Adams Park will always hold a place in my heart. It was symbolic that the last team we played before winning the GMVC was Wycombe, and that Gareth Ainsworth, a man revered by Imps fans as one of the greatest ever, should be in the opposition dugout.

Still, we didn’t win, nor have we beaten them since 2009. Well, records are there to be broken!
