The Imps managed a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury yesterday, despite being second-best for large parts of the encounter.
The wind didn’t help matters, but in a poor first half, Shrewsbury certainly had the edge. When we went 3-5-2, we upped our game and ended up with more shots on target than the home side, albeit three compared to their two. Neither side truly deserved three points, but we got them, and that’s all that mattered. After having all three snatched from us in dramatic circumstances on Tuesday, it was nice to get back to winning ways.
Salop (Richard Godson, read the first point in the link) fans are not impressed with the outcome, with them taking to social media to blast their performance. They’ve got every right, if their chance had gone in and ours hadn’t, our fans would likely be the same.
Matt Taylor felt his side deserved something from the game, as he told their official site. “Lincoln sat off us and allowed us to play in the first half, and the second half was completely different. We have got to feel that, we have got to sense that, and ultimately we have got to be better in the big moments in the game and respect the point. I think the players did, but there was just that one moment they got from a second phase set-play that we don’t deal with. That has ultimately cost us a point, and the opposition goes away with all three.”
On the goal, he added, “To go in at half-time 0-0 with the chances we created, how comfortable we were in possession, I was really disappointed so ultimately, we’ve not taken our chances today, and that’s cost us. I haven’t seen the goal back yet; what we’ll do is watch it back, removing the emotion as best we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Whilst Taylor’s assessment will be without emotion, the same can not be said for the supporters, who were full of emotion at the final whistle. Here’s the pick of their comments.

First decent-ish team we've played at home and we lose. #Salop

Saw nothing at all to get excited about, or even give a bit of hope.. one ball over top to Udoh is the only idea we have.. don't look like a team at all, a shadow of last seasons battling spirit.. we've replaced quality for numbers..

Far too much long ball.. Lack of ideas going forward. Thought Lincoln were really poor and didn’t create a lot, smash and grab! You can throw players at it but not sure if that makes a difference with these tactics..

Awful second half performance. No quality

Awfully poor game of quality to watch. Both teams awful. Couldn’t see any team scoring. One goal was always going to win it. We continued to look lacklustre after they scored. Lincoln made two changes, we couldn’t and they come into the game a little more @salopcast

How have we lost that?? Sign some attackers ffs

FT 0-1
Salop were the better side overall and I would say that was an off day performance wise for Lincoln, we really should have scored in the first half. Salop were bad in possession and didn’t looked like scoring second half. Gifted Lincoln a goal. We need some reinforcements. pic.twitter.com/1LzhEezkkh— Salopcast (@salopcast) August 19, 2023
