On This Day: Cup Shocks, Player Exits and Money Troubles

As you know, I’ve been doing a series of articles titled ‘20 Years Ago‘, featuring the 2003/04 season.

They’ve been fairly depressing reading so far – draws, defeats and a single goal. Nobody really wants to read about us losing 2-1 to Bury – wait until the two 0-0 draws in a row. Thrilling.

However, this weekend has been good for the Imps in the past. I decided I’d delve into the archives and see what was happening throughout the eighties and nineties at the Bank. There are some great newspaper clippings on these pages featuring games, goals, injuries, departures and a few money troubles as well.

If you’ve got a few minutes, you’re hopefully going to enjoy this little trip down memory lane, spanning 20 years between 1980 and 2000.

1980

City made it three games unbeaten at the start of the 1980/81 season with a stroll in the park against Wigan Athletic. Gordon Hobson bagged in the first half, Tony Cunningham in the second, although Maurice Burton did conclude the side was not ‘up to the brilliant form they showed against Hull in the League Cup’.

Imps fans were in for a treat – we won the next two matches 3-0, away at Crewe and at home to Halifax, and were promoted at the end of the season.

On the same weekend, former Imps Glenn Cockerill picked up an injury for Swindon against Fulham, ruling him out of the Football League Cup match between them and us the following Wednesday.
