The period between Jacko leaving and Chris Sutton coming in was not pretty. Simon Clark, a former Imps academy prospect, had played for Peterborough, Stevenage, and Orient during his career and joined the club in 2007 as part of the Centre of Excellence team. He left for Peterborough, coming back in January 2008. In September 2009, he was in the dugout as caretaker boss.

It started well – a resounding 3-0 win against an awful Darlington team. Sadly, he then suffered four defeats, the final one a humbling 3-0 thrashing against Notts County. Sutton had already been named at that point but was in the stands as Clarke took charge. Brutally, he was let go the following day.

He went on to manage Kings Lynn, Stamford, and Worksop, as well as working as a scout at Preston. He’s still coaching today at AFC Wimbledon in League Two.
