January Window: What Do We Need?

We’re coming up to silly season – the January transfer window.

That means a clamour to make signings, constantly refreshing news feeds and the scourge of the fake Twitter account. It’s a time fans love but also hate. For every possible incoming, there’s a club coveting our stars, and there’s always a fear we might end up weaker come February.

Our squad looks threadbare at times recently, but it’s also hard to pinpoint where we might be looking to do business. Are we going to be bringing players in for a 3-4-3 formation, or do we need a rebuild to suit a 4-2-3-1? What’s the craic with our loan players? Will they be coming back? If we only sign players to improve the first team, how do we strengthen, given that our starting XI looks settled in two-thirds of the pitch?

Here are my thoughts.

Coming in

A nice easy start – I don’t expect anyone to come in for the keeper position. We have some really good cover here – Jensen is doing well as a starting keeper, and Jordan Wright, we know, is capable of filling in. Not being picked for Accrington might have been a blow for Wright, but he’s still a big player to have around the team.

Current loans

We have Sam Long out on loan at present, so will he be coming back? I certainly don’t think so from a first-team perspective, but I guess there’s an outside chance we could bring him back from Falkirk. He’s been out of the side there recently, so a recall and loan back out wouldn’t be surprising, although I don’t expect it to happen.
