20-Year-Old Returns To Sincil Bank

Young defender Hayden Cann has returned to the club, ending his association with Peterborough Sports early.

The 20-year-old joined The Turbines in July on a season-long loan and has impressed in the heart of their defence. He has been recalled from that loan early, which is an indicator of a second loan spell. My guess? League of Ireland with Oisin Gallagher or something in the National League like Jay Benn.

Cann has been with the Imps since the age of eight, as is as close to being ‘one of our own’ as any young man can be. In October 2020, he made his full debut in the EFL Trophy against Mansfield, penning a three-year deal the day after, keeping him at the club until 2023.

Since then, he’s made the odd appearance for the Imps in pre-season but has only featured for the first team once, against Shrewsbury in the EFL Trophy. He has had some loan spells with Lincoln United, Gainsborough Trinity, and, latterly, Peterborough. On each occasion, he has been a staple in his loan club’s first team.

Just before his move to Lincoln Road, he penned a new Imps deal, which will keep him at the club until this summer ‘at least’. One would imagine that includes an option for us if we feel he has developed sufficiently. With three goals during his stay in the National League North and upwards of 20 outings, it is fair to say he’s done everything he can with his chance.

He appeared for the Imps in the 7-0 friendly win against Boston in pre-season, and I liked the look of him then. It seems his development is to be served elsewhere, and whilst I don’t see him as a first-team player just yet, another step up is only going to be a positive thing for him.

I’m not fully expecting a loan to be announced straight away – I’d imagine Michael Skubala will be keen to have a look at some of these young prospects around the trianing ground before they depart, so perhaps in a week or two, we’ll hear of Hayden going elsewhere.
