The Imps are on a roll, and while it might feel a little late for us to crash the promotion party, you never quite know.
Tuesday’s fixture against Shrewsbury was, arguably, the most entertaining league game at Sincil Bank since we returned from COVID in 2021. We attacked with pace and had a little too much for a really poor Shrewsbury team. We underperformed our xG, which is unusual, and had we scored five, few could have complained. As a standalone game, it was exciting. As part of a wider run, it makes really impressive reading. We’re the form team in the division; over the last six games we have five wins and a draw, putting us ahead of league leaders Portsmouth. Unfortunately for us, promotion rivals (dare I say that) Leyton Orient are also in good form.
Going back further, we’re seventh over the last 12 games, fourth over the last ten, and second over the last eight. Slowly but surely, we’ve begun to show the sort of output that everyone suggested we could have at the beginning of the season. It’s been quite a roller coaster this campaign, but we’re looking likely to end in a crescendo.
Why? Why is it that City look strong now, able to keep clean sheets and see out games, when over Christmas, we lost four league games in a row, and we failed to win between November 28th and January 27th? What has changed? Is it as simple as players coming back into the fold? Or is there more to it?
As always, I’m delving into the nitty-gritty with four reasons I believe the Imps are so much better now.
