Michael Skubala on Loan Player Progress and Jensen Injury

Michael Skubala has been giving his pre-match press conference, and he’s explained how he sees the development of on-loan striker, Joe Taylor.

The King’s Lynn-born forward scored against Carlisle and bagged an assist as we kept the pressure on at the top of the table. It continued a wonderful run in which the 21-year-old has scored nine times in nine outings, starting with his goal against Exeter. It took his cumulative tally to 21 for the season, with 12 for Colchester United.

That form is reward for the hard work Joe has been putting in on the training pitch, which our head coach believes is paying dividends with his all round game.

“Joe’s doing things now that he wasn’t doing when he came into the building, so he’s getting his rewards through chances and goals,” Michael said. “He’s doing things like pressing better, he’s working harder in moments of the game where we need him to react quick and he’s starting to grow into more of an all round talent.

“That’s why he came to us; our job is for him to affect us and make us better, which I think he’s done, and he’s a great character around the building. Also my job is to help him improve because we know he’s a loan player for Luton, and that’s what they wanted, so I think at the minute that relationship’s going really well.”

Taylor had failed to score in his previous 19 Football League outing for Peterborough and Luton, but he’s been a sensation for the Imps. His goal on Monday came at a time when the opposition were taking the game to us, and coupled with a wonderful save from Jordan Wright, perhaps helped swing the balance back in our favour.

Wright was starting his first Football League game since we drew 0-0 with Barnsley last season when he deputised for the suspended Carl Rushworth. The question as to whether he will start this weekend is one that is yet to be answered, as big Dane Lukas Jensen is still not cleared as fully fit.

“He’s had an injection. He’s got a bad back, he’s not been on the grass today,” Michael said when asked about his keeper’s fitness. “We don’t think it’s going to be long term which is good news; whether he makes this weekend or not, we’ve got to see.”

However, there’s no fear that if he can’t make it, we’re weakened, as Jordan once again stepped up, as he had to under Josh Griffiths and Carl Rushworth.

“Jordan was fantastic and made some big saves, so if Lucas is not ready, then Jordan’s definitely ready and more than capable of stepping up and doing the job,” our head coach added.
