Former Imp Closes In On Move To League One Rivals

In a surprise move, Lewis Fiorini looks likely to sign for Stockport County on a permanent deal.

It’s been reported by Football Insider, and if there’s any truth in it, it’s a big signing for the promoted club. With first team chances not coming his way, it seems the midfielder is looking for options elsewhere, and a move to Stockport certainly allows him to stay closer to home. Stockport will be a decent side this season, and if they are after Firoini, there’s no doubt they’re getting an asset they could sell on in the future. If he catches fire, that is.

I thought he stood out as a decent player in a poor Imps side, a team that just never got going. When he played, he impressed me, and he chipped in with a few goals as we avoided the drop in 2021/22, perhaps the most disappointing season we’ve had since before Danny and Nicky came to the club. In total, he played 44 games for us, scoring six goals, and I was convinced his next stop would be regular Championship football.

Things haven’t gone well for him since he left City. He didn’t play much for Blackpool after following Michael Appleton there, but that was injury-related. He started well, picked up a hamstring injury and missed a huge chunk of the season. In total, he played 14 times, scoring once, but also conceded the penalty against Millwall that sent the Tangerines down.

He was injured again during the summer at Man City and eventually bagged a move back to Charlton under Appleton in January. He moved to the Valley on January 5th, looking to work with his former mentor, but Appleton was sacked just over two weeks later. He played three times for Appleton before he left but only twice for Nathan Jones afterwards.

It’s clearly been a tough two seasons for Fiorini on and off the field, but he’s still only 22 and has a lot of football ahead of him. There’s no doubt that if he gets fit and plays regular football, he will have the quality to be a division higher than us, so I see this as a real coup for Stockport. I really liked Lewis, and I wish him all the best for 44 of the 46 games next season.i
