Imps Confirm Second Exit of The Day

Following hot on the heels of Chris Cohen’s departure, City have announced Jordan Wright has completed a move to League Two side Grimsby Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper joined City from Nottingham Forest in January 2022 and kept 10 clean sheets in 31 appearances for the Imps. Wright also shone in the penalty shootouts he was involved in – making a hat-trick of saves against Barrow in the Carabao Cup run, which ultimately led to City reaching the last 16 of the competition for the first time since the 1967/68 season.

However, at 25, he is sure to want some first-team football, and a move to Grimsby seems sensible. He’s a good keeper with plenty of years ahead of him, but he needs to play regular football.

Jez George, City’s director of football, said: “Jordan has served the club really well over the last two and a half years.

“This role is difficult to sustain for a long period of time, especially as Jordan played a number of games in his first season after an injury to Josh Griffiths but was frustrated by limited opportunities in the last two seasons due to the form and consistency of Carl Rushworth and Lukas Jensen.

“Therefore, we felt that it was only fair and respectful to allow Jordan to pursue his desire for regular football and the opportunity to establish himself as a no.1 goalkeeper within the EFL.”

There’s no doubt Jordan is a good keeper, but if the intention is to keep Lukas Jensen, then it would be hard to also keep Jordan happy for another season, when we could cash in now. Also, with Sam Long coming back, we have a decision to make, and I strongly suspect that we’ll have another keeper eyed up as well, even if that is a project player who goes out on loan, and Sam stays to challenge for the number one jersey.

Either way, despite his choice of club, everyone at the Stacey West wishes Jordan all the best. Personally, I’ve no doubt he’ll be a huge presence for the Codheads over the next 12 months, and get the run of games he so richly deserves.
