2005/06 – The Season History Forgot (Pt 1)

This is going to be a big ongoing series. Just to warn you now.

I decided I wanted to do a deep dive into a season, and put it out to Patreons to ask which they’d like to see. The vote, rather overwhelmingly, came back as a season I like to refer to as the one that history forgot.

We all remember the halcyon Keith seasons, the two Millennium Stadium appearances, and that heartbreaking night at the McAlpine. We all remember the John Schofield side of 2006/07, the one that swept all aside until Christmas, but as the days got warmer, we ran colder. That bleeds into the Magnificent Seven, Sutton, Tilson, and on and on.

Often it is easy to forget Keith’s final season, one riddled with stories off the field but serving up few memories on it. I say ‘few memories,’ but we did beat Grimsby 5-0 at the Bank, stuff a Championship side 5-1 in the cup without reserve team, and see a remarkable squad churn lead us to a fifth play-off in a row, one barely deserved.

That’s why I wanted to do a deep dive on the 2005/06 season, I just didn’t realise how deep it would be. I spent four hours at the library going through old Echos last Wednesday, and I got to the end of September….

You’re going to just get June in part one. Part two could come next week. Enjoy.
