Six Memorable Opening Day Fixtures

2020 – Lincoln 2-0 Oxford United

2020 was a season of hope, but not a lot more. We’d stripped away Danny Cowley’s squad, the old guard was gone and Michael Appleton’s era began in earnest. We didn’t know it, but recruitment had gone well, but that mattered little. Gates were shut, fans were at home and the season felt almost unreal. It wasn’t even the first game; we’d already beaten Crewe in the cup, and now we faced Oxford United, a big team at this level and no worse then than they are now. The outcome? A sensational performance from Alex Palmer, and what I felt was a surprise 2-0 win for the Imps. My first thought was ‘three points closer to safety’ – if only we’d known. The season ended in disappointment, but when it comes to hope turning into something much, much better, then 2020 should never be forgotten. Also, Karl Robinson’s post-match rant about the Covid-affected facilities still make me think ‘tosser’ whenever his name is mentioned.
