Imps Linked With Championship Midfielder Move

City have been credited with having interest in Plymouth Argyle midfielder Callum Wright, as per Alan Nixon on his Patreon.

It’s one of his Sunday stories, and apparently, it also appeared in the red-top rag he writes for on Sunday. It’s a throwaway line in the paper (I’m told), and the story on Patreon doesn’t hold much more information (I’m told; Nixon has blocked me).

I’ve reported this because it is from a so-called ‘proper’ journalist, and it’s being reported elsewhere, but I’m not entirely sure it’s one to wait around for. There’s nothing wrong with Wright – he’s a decent player and would add value to our squad, but he would only add value in areas where we already have plenty of cover.

The 24-year-old started his career with Leicester but spent time during his youth with Everton and Blackburn. While at Leicester, he was loaned to Cheltenham, where I know he impressed, resulting in a second spell there in 2021/22. That saw him help them stay in League One, with nine goals and five assists, playing on the right side of their midfield.

The following season, he joined Blackpool in the Championship but struggled to impress himself on their side, so he moved to Plymouth. Ironically, he was a hit in Devon and ended up swapping places with Blackpool at the end of the season. This campaign, he’s been labelled as one unlikely to get game time under Rooney, although if he waits a couple of weeks, he might have a new manager to impress anyway!

Wright is an attacking midfielder in the Tom Bayliss and JJ McKiernan mould, so I cannot see how we’d be lining up a move unless we see something in his stats to suggest a position change. He’s right-footed, so possibly right wing-back, but would we be looking at spending a fee on a player for a position that already has a pretty nailed-on candidate in Darikwa? Wright has played wing-back for Plymouth on rare occasions, but not regularly. He has, on occasion, been played as a centre forward, but we’re talking 36 minutes of his 1255 last season, so it’s not like it’s something that is obvious.

I haven’t heard of any interest from us in the player (not that I always would) and while it is nice to have something to chat about in this position, I do think this might be little more than paper talk.
