“A Privilege” – Michael Skubala on Key Moment Against Peterborough United

Imps boss Michael Skubala believes the 1-1 draw with Peterborough was a ‘terrific’ game of football, and that the outcome was fair.

City opened the scoring in the first half courtesy of Ben House’s third goal of the season, only for Kwame Poku to level with an outstanding strike in the second period. The game had few chances, but was engrossing and enjoyable.

Skubala, who moves onto a record-equalling 12 matches away from home without defeat, admitted it was a brilliant display of football, which both sides wanted to win.

“I thought it was a terrific game of football,” said Skubala, talking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire after the game. Of course, you want to win every game, but I believe it was a fair score and a fantastic game overall. It was a brilliant display of football with two teams set up tactically to try and stop each other while also looking to hurt each other.

“In the end, you could see how much both sides wanted to win. It was a fantastic game, but I thought we could have won it. We had some key moments, and we knew how they’d play and set up. They want to dominate possession, but we thought we could hurt them.

“At times, we really looked like we could break through. I wanted to win, and I felt we were capable of doing so, which is why we’re disappointed. But that just shows how far we’ve come as a group—being disappointed in a result like this is a positive sign of our growth.

“As I always say, if you can’t win, don’t lose. We’ll take a lot of growth from this and go again.”

It was City’s first point against Peterborough in five outings, and the first goal in that period. The move that led to our opener was excellent, involving multiple players before Dom Jeffries teed up House for the neat finish. It was a goal that gave Skubala a huge amount of please, as it’s been worked on in training.

“We’ve been working on things like that. It’s really a privilege to see the lads execute it. That was probably one of the best goals I’ve seen us score since I’ve been here. It was a fantastic goal. The team worked the ball so well, and I’m not sure how many passes were involved, but once we got in that position, we wanted to stay there.

“I thought our press today was excellent, especially in the first half. We had moments where one or two chances might have fallen to someone like Ben House on the edge. We played for those moments, knowing that if we locked them in, we’d create half chances and opportunities. The effort and desire today were incredible, so I can’t fault the performance at all.”

The result leaves the Imps in the top six in the early table, with Wigan Athletic up at the Bank this weekend in the early kick off. Then, a week on Saturday, it’s off to Cambridge, where the club will look to make it 13 away games unbeaten since the start of the year, a new club record.
