Chesham United: All You Need To Know

The Imps were handed an away draw in the FA Cup, and for the third season in four, it is against one of the non-league sides still in the competition.

Narrow games against Bowers & Pitsea and Chippenham tell us this will be no pushover as we travel to Buckinghamshire to face National League South outfit Chesham United. Sponsored by the Channel Four programme Taskmaster, the Generals are currently 14th in their division, with four wins, two draws and four defeats to their name. Here’s one word of warning – that’s higher than Chippenham Town.

They play at the Meadow, a 5,000-capacity stadium with 284 seats, which means we should get around 750 tickets, which is 15%. They have joint managers James Duncan and Michael Murray, and they also play in a claret and blue shirt, not unlike Emley did way back in 1998. It’s getting more ominous by the second!

They’ve already played four FA Cup matches this season. They beat Cray Valley in the second qualifying round, then drew 0-0 with Bishop’s Cleeve, before a replay saw them secure a 4-0 win. Their victory this weekend against National League side Yeovil saw them progress to the first round, but it should also delight Imps fans – Mark Cooper is Yeovil’s manager, and he was fuming. That’s to be filed under ‘things you love to see’.

They’ve got a bit of FA Cup history – in 2016/17 they were beaten 2-1 by Peterborough, but in 2014/15 they beat Bristol Rovers in round one, before losing to Bradford City. They’ve even made the third round before – in 1979–80 they beat Minehead 2–1 in the first round, and Merthyr Tydfil 3–1 in a second round replay, before losing 2–0 at home to Cambridge United in the third round.

Chesham’s squad includes former Bracknell winger Joe Grant, who has bagged six goals already this season, and Connor Stevens, who played for Boreham Wood, where he featured in their FA Cup games against Bournemouth and Everton. He’s got a giant killing pedigree.

A handful of former Imps have also worn the claret of the Generals, notably Bruno Andrade, who made six appearances for them last season. Dean Chandler, Bruce Grobbelaar, and (obviously) Jefferson Louis have also featured for both clubs.

The tie will take place on the first weekend of November.
