City fell to a narrow defeat on Saturday afternoon to a very good Wycombe Wanderers side. Wycombe managed to continue their tremendous run of form by making it nine straight wins in all competitions, writes Kyle Fox.
Unfortunately, Saturday was another game that got away. It was another game we could’ve got more out of but we couldn’t quite manage it. We have now played both of what was the top two going in to this weekend (Wycombe and Birmingham) and conceded six goals at home in both those games. As well as we played in both of those games, conceding three in each of them gives you a massive hill to climb to get anything out the game.
It was a really promising opening 15 minutes from City which resulted in a half chance for Moylan which he had to snatch at after McGrandles capitalised on a mistake from the opposition at the back. It also resulted in a goal on the 14 minute mark. We managed to work the ball out to the right flank through Erhahon where Ben House was waiting who put a low cross into the box which was turned in really smartly by Darikwa. It was a well worked goal with Ethan Erhahon at the heart of the build up to it.
It was no surprise to me to see him back in the starting XI as soon as he was available again, especially after his impressive 45 minute cameo against Exeter last weekend. He was key to everything good in our play on Saturday, as he always is.
Poor defending ffs

Their first goal was a sucker punch after the good start from us, but it was a lovely little dinked ball to the back post from the very talented player Humphreys (on loan from Ipswich), and he’s always a real danger and looks like a real talent. The forever reliable Darikwa made an uncharacteristic mistake and misjudged the cross, allowing it to drop right into Kone’s path, who finished nicely past Wickens. He carried on his excellent goal-scoring form in the league. Darikwa would more than make up for his error, though, by scoring both of our goals.
GET IN. What a ball Humphreys

Then came Wycombe’s second goal on the stroke of halftime, always a bad time to concede a goal, in my eyes. It was a really well orchestrated goal, and the build-up deserved the end product. They played it through the thirds sublimely, finished off by Onyedinma who had a tap in at the end of the move. It’s always a setback, even if it’s just subconsciously conceding a goal right before halftime. Especially in this scenario after how we had started the game, going in at half time behind must have been a blow for the lads.
One of the best goals I’ve ever seen us score 🔥

However, we came out pretty strong again at the start of the second half within ten minutes of the restart we came very close with a wonderful effort from Dylan Duffy which he conjured up completely on his own and he was unbelievably unlucky not to score. Ben House also had a chance less than two minutes after Duffy’s effort. A chance I’m sure many would argue he should have done better with, I would tend to agree.
After almost putting us level at one end, Duffy then gave a penalty away within ten minutes of his attempt with a trip on Onyedinma in the box, which was bearing down on our goal. A clear penalty, no complaints. It gave a great opportunity for George Wickens, who pulled off a clever safe with his outstretched foot from the penalty after Leahy tried to place his effort in the centre of the goal.
Then came the killer blow on 72 minutes as Wycombe centre half Low popped up at the back post to nod in a cross a few yards out after they recycled a corner. That killed our chance of getting back in the game at that point.
OH JOE LOW YOU BEAUTY

As we always do in that position though, we tried to get back into it. We came close with Darikwa who forced a safe out of their keeper at his near house after getting on to a House cross the back post. We always have the danger of leaving ourselves more open as we commit to getting a result out of the game, and off the back of that, Wycombe should have had a fourth on the counterattack. McCleary missed a golden chance from eight yards out, skied it over the bar.
However, there was another twist to come as we finally got ourselves that second goal and it was a screamer. Could easily be our goal of the season far as off the back of a corner, the ball rolls out to Tendayi Darikwa on the edge of the box who rifles an effort straight into the top right corner. A beautiful strike and it’s such a shame it was just a consolation goal.
We ought to have scored 5 at least, got to be more clinical in front of goal.
