‘We’re Done For’- Cambridge United Reaction To Lincoln City Draw

Garry Monk had mixed emotions following his side’s 1-1 draw with Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon which was similar to the online reaction as Grecian fans shared differing opinions.

Post-match in his interview with the media, Garry Monk felt it was ‘overall a really good performance’ and if they had managed to score a second it would’ve been ‘a deserved win’. Monk thought Cambridge fought for all three points as he said;

“It’s a point, but we want it to be three. We tried all we could to try and turn it into three.”

“Spirit, endeavour, some quality at times.”

“There won’t be too many teams that have come here and controlled the game how we wanted to.”

“Once we got through that 20-minute period,- we controlled the game from that point, especially going in to the second half.”

The Cambridge United head coach also went on to mention that he felt his side were unjustly not awarded a penalty on two separate occasions but he didn’t elaborate on when those moments were. This is what he had to say; “We have two clear penalties that we don’t get for whatever reason. You need those things to go for you.”

He also had a lot of praise for City’s young goalkeeper Zach Jeacock as Monk spoke about the saves he made; “Their keeper made two unbelievable saves- you have to credit the keeper” Lincoln’s No 31 impressed again as he deservedly kept his spot over the returning George Wickens. He made 3 important saves, distributed well and was comfortable with the ball at his feet.

The U’s have picked up a bit of form in the last five games including this one. They have drawn three against Lincoln, Wycombe and Bolton which are all good results for a side struggling at the bottom of the league. They also managed to beat a faltering Mansfield side and were narrowly defeated by Rotherham. Those results look even better when you consider the five games before these all ending in defeat for United. However, the fans are desperate for wins so these results would usually be good but are instead causing Grecian fans to curse their side for not grabbing a winner or for not holding on to a lead. Just to add fuel to the fire, Shrewsbury and Burton especially have been picking up wins instead of draws over the last month which keeps Cambridge further away from safety.

Garry Monk did also acknowledge Cambridge’s lack of ruthlessness on the day, especially after Lincoln went down to ten men late on in the match. He reflected on this when saying; “We could’ve been more of a threat at times- we had control but we didn’t use it well enough to threaten in that last five, ten minutes. That’s the only slight disappointment from the game.”
