‘Thanks For The Aneurysm’ Barnsley Reaction To Narrow Victory In Lincoln City Thriller

Darrell Clarke came away from the hectic football match on Saturday afternoon feeling pleased with the result but frustrated with his side’s lack of game management and how it could have cost them.

It isn’t the first time Barnsley have done it this season (especially at home) which just added to his frustration. The Tykes boss said in his post-match interview “I don’t think the lads want me to live too long do they?”

“4-1, 3-0, control. It’s happened too many times. For whatever reason, we just make crazy decisions when we’ve been leading in games this season.”

“I want to be seeing out a game better than that.”

However, Clarke also mentioned that he knew his side would not be totally at 100% which affected their performance during the game. He said “I knew we were going to be a bit leggy today. We’re down to 8, 9 players out the squad. Injured, suspensions and the boys have put a hell of a shift in.

“Sometimes when it’s that third game of the week, you need a squad, you need to make changes. Didn’t think I could be able to do that today.”

The online reaction paints this is as a frustration aimed at the club due to to lack of signings or signing the wrong players as well as a struggle for the manager. Many fans online shared their annoyance with the lack of options that Darrel Clarke had at his disposal on Saturday which they clearly believe was an error during the transfer windows.

However, despite Lincoln’s late and almost successful attempt at a comeback, Barnsley managed to see the game out and grab another three points. Saturday’s result made it three wins on the bounce for them. The fact it was a home win made it all the more sweeter for the manager and the Barnsley fans as their home form has been appalling. It has been equal to some of the current lowest teams in the division (e.g. Cambridge who have won the same amount of games at home and had won more before Barnsley’s victory on Saturday).

A significant factor in Barnsley’s victory was their clinicality in front of goal. The fact that all four goals were gifted by Lincoln is irrelevant in that sense as you still have to take the chances you’re gifted and the Reds did that very well. They had five shots, they got all of them on target and scored four goals out of those 5 shots. An excellent conversion rate to say the least. Darrel Clarke commented on this in his post-match interview, “I thought finishing was clinical. Really clinical in taking our opportunities.”

He was also pleased with the performance of his starting front line in Keillor-Dunn and Humphrys as well as super sub Max Watters. He reviewed their performances in his post-match interview, “Great to have Max back. I thought Humphs (Humphrys) and DKD (Keillor-Dunn) were excellent again. Really led the front line very very well.”

Keillor-Dunn has been flying recently but especially in his last two games. He popped up with a brace in their previous game against Northampton in a 2-1 away victory. He followed that up with a goal and an assist on Saturday. Two man of the match performances in a row. What a massive player he is for the Tykes and what a signing he is turning out to be. That puts his tally up to 13 goals and three assists in the league so far this campaign. Brilliant return.
