David Fairclough

David Fairclough won the First Division title three times, the European Cup twice, the UEFA Cup once and scored in two legs of a 7-1 thrashing of Hamburg in the European Super Cup. In the days of one sub, where appearances were hard to come by, he managed 153 for Liverpool, scoring 55 times – that’s a goal every three matches, and many of those matches are assumed to have come from the bench. He was known as a super sub after getting a late winner against St Etienne, but only 61 of his outings were from the bench.
After leaving Liverpool, he had a short spell in the US with NASL side Toronto Blizzard, then moved to the Swiss side FC Lucerne before returning to England for spells with Manchester City and Norwich. It was after his stint at Carrow Road that City came knocking. At just 28, he would have been a huge coup had he signed, and John Pickering had got Phil Boersma, a former teammate of Fairclough, to try to seal the deal.
He failed. Fairclough signed for Oldham, where he scored once in 17 matches. He had a successful spell in Belgium with Beveren before winning the Football League trophy with Tranmere in 1990.
