City secured their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup with a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory away at Burton Albion.
The Imps combined defensive resilience with measured attacking play, showing both the solidity and the growing threat to carve out chances across two contrasting halves.

Lincoln Grow Into The Game
The first half was shaped by control and careful build-up. We registered an expected goals total of 1.06 compared with Burton’s 0.02, highlighting their ability to fashion the clearer opportunities. Skubala’s side were accurate in possession, completing 186 of 221 passes at an 84.16% success rate, while restricting the Brewers to fewer progressive actions. The Imps attempted 28 duels in the first half, winning 61.9%, and their midfield structure limited Burton to just two shots.
There were glimpses of attacking intent, too. The Imps created 13 positional attacks before the interval and forced four recoveries in the opposition half. Although chances were scarce, efficiency mattered: a 40% duel success rate in the final third underlined their willingness to contest territory and keep Burton under pressure.
The hosts relied on long passes and occasional direct play, completing only 12 of 33 attempts, which made it difficult to penetrate our defensive block.

Second-Half Efficiency and Defensive Steel
After the break, the game opened up. Burton tried to be more expansive, completing 155 of 198 passes, but we continued to pose the sharper threat, with xG rising to 1.37 compared with the home side’s 0.33. The visitors managed 21 positional attacks and three counterattacks, two of which produced efforts on goal, demonstrating a greater balance between containment and transition.
Defensively, City were tested more, facing 38 duels in the half, but they held firm. Aerial strength improved, winning 66.7% of contested headers, while their overall duel success reached 55.3%. Recoveries were key: 85 in total across the half, 62.9% of which were converted into retained possession. Even as Burton increased the tempo, our back line, supported by disciplined midfield tracking.
The data underlined a side growing in confidence. Passing accuracy remained steady at 78.28%, while in attacking areas, we improved our crossing efficiency and offered more variety in forward movement. Burton had more shots after the interval but were limited to low-quality efforts, with our shape and work rate forcing them to shoot from less dangerous zones.

Writer’s View
This was an encouraging display from the Imps, blending control with resilience. The first half set the platform: calm on the ball, organised off it, and clinical in taking the game’s decisive chance. The second half showcased adaptability, with the Imps managing greater attacking volume while absorbing Burton’s attempts to break through.
In a cup tie away from home, the ability to maintain defensive discipline alongside developing attacking threat is exactly what will please Skubala most. We did not just progress; we did so with a performance that suggested both tactical clarity and depth of character.
