One Down: Imps League Rivals First To Sack Manager

One of Lincoln City’s League One rivals have acted quickly, with Wycombe Wanderers dismissing head coach Mike Dodds just eight games into the season.

Wycombe, who were play-off semi-finalists last term, have slumped to 19th after losing five of their opening fixtures. That run ended with a damaging 2-1 defeat to bottom club Peterborough United – Posh’s first win in any competition this season.

Dodds only took charge in February, succeeding Matt Bloomfield after his move to Luton Town. Initially, the former Sunderland assistant steadied the Chairboys and guided them to fifth place, only to fall short against Charlton Athletic in the play-offs.

But momentum hasn’t carried into this campaign. Wycombe have collected just one league win, equal on points with Reading in the relegation places. Their collapse comes despite starting the year second in the table when Dodds was appointed.

The club confirmed that first-team coach Peter Shuttleworth has also departed. A short statement thanked both for their efforts but acknowledged the board had been left with little choice.

For Lincoln, the dismissal highlights how quickly fortunes can turn in League One. Wycombe have been a tough opponent in recent years, but instability at Adams Park could change that. A club that reached the Championship as recently as 2021 now find themselves battling to stay out of the drop zone.

Attention now turns to who Wycombe turn to next. Bloomfield’s departure was disruptive, but the wrong replacement has left them facing an early-season crisis. Whoever comes in inherits a squad low on confidence and struggling for results.
