Hamshaw targets McGoldrick as Oakwell hoodoo looms for Rotherham

Rotherham United head coach Matt Hamshaw talked up Barnsley forward David McGoldrick before Saturday’s derby, calling the veteran “one of the best players I’ve ever worked with” from their time together at Derby County.

Hamshaw added he hopes McGoldrick is “upset at five o’clock” as the Millers look to flip a long-running Oakwell trend.

“David McGoldrick is one of the best players I’ve ever worked with. He’s a great character, a great bloke. But I hope he’s upset at five o’clock on Saturday and I’m quite happy.”

Barnsley’s summer recruit arrives on the back of a hat-trick against Manchester United under-21s in midweek. The backdrop is stark: Oakwell has been a bogey venue for Rotherham, who are winless on their last 16 visits in all competitions, with their last success there coming in the League Cup in August 1970.

The sides have already met at Oakwell this season in the EFL Cup, with the Reds winning 2-1 in the second round.
