Peterborough United’s Under-18s cruised into the second round of the FA Youth Cup with a dominant 5-0 win over the Imps at the Weston Homes Stadium.

A clinical display from the hosts saw Bolu Shofowoke net twice, while Lucca Mendonca, Maxim Mlityalwa and Eddie Fox were also on target in a one-sided encounter. In the Imps’ defence, the squad contained a peppering of Under-16s and shadow scholars, with Josh Kennealey also missing out due to a tight quad.

City struggled to gain a foothold throughout as Posh controlled proceedings from the off. The opening goal came midway through the first half when Shofowoke latched onto a clever through-ball, rounded the Imps keeper and calmly slotted home into an empty net.

Captain Mendonca doubled the lead shortly after, reacting quickest in a crowded box to fire home from close range after a scramble in front of goal. The Imps were limited to half chances, with Posh goalkeeper Ben Westcott only called into meaningful action late in the contest.

The home side extended their advantage soon after the restart when Eddie Fox smashed a low strike into the net from the edge of the area. Substitute Mlityalwa then made it 4-0 as the game began to run away from Lincoln.

Shofowoke completed his brace just before the hour mark, showing strength and composure to beat the goalkeeper to a loose ball and guide it over the line despite pressure from a recovering defender.

The game looked like getting even further away from City when Patryk Sykut forced a save from Taylor following a well-worked set-piece, while Mendonca narrowly headed over from a corner in the final stages.

It was a night to forget for the young Imps, whose FA Youth Cup campaign ends at the first hurdle, while Posh advance with confidence to the second round.
