‘Brutal industry’: Cleverley says Plymouth must “bite down on the gum shield”
Tom Cleverley says Plymouth are in a “brutal industry” and has vowed to fight through the club’s difficult run, insisting short-term results now matter more than the long-term plan.
The head coach was backed this week by chief executive Paul Berne, who said “nothing has changed in terms of Tom being the right person,” despite a poor start and growing pressure.
Cleverley pointed to the circumstances around his appointment, saying he inherited “half the recruitment” and a very young squad, and that the transition between divisions was always going to be hard. He admitted the team are in a relegation battle, but said the only response is work.
“I only know one way, that is to really bite down on the gum shield, work as hard as I possibly can and fight through it,” he said. “Short term results are priority number one. We’re putting ninety nine per cent of our work towards that.”
