Ex-Imp Injury Agony Revealed

Former Lincoln City midfielder Danny Mandroiu has suffered a serious ACL injury, sustained during Shamrock Rovers’ FAI Cup final win over Cork City at the Aviva Stadium earlier this month.

The 27 year old, who spent two seasons with the Imps between 2022 and 2024, was introduced as a late substitute in Dublin with Rovers already on their way to a 2–0 victory. Instead of enjoying the closing stages of a cup final win, he was stretchered off in clear distress, with scans later confirming the ACL damage.

He has since undergone reconstruction surgery and confirmed on social media that the operation “went very well”, but also admitted it was “the news I never wanted to hear” and “the lowest I have been in my career”.

From an ex Imps angle, it is particularly tough to see for a player who produced some genuinely memorable moments in a Lincoln shirt. After arriving from Shamrock Rovers in the summer of 2022, Mandroiu had to be patient through an early injury, but once fit he showed why the club had gone to Ireland to get him. Goals against Sheffield Wednesday and that winner at Barnsley helped light up a period of transition for City and offered a reminder of his natural ability to change games in an instant.

He moved on in the summer of 2024 and returned to Shamrock Rovers, looking to kick on again in familiar surroundings and earn another crack at European football. By the time the Cup final came around he had worked his way back into Stephen Bradley’s plans, part of a side chasing a league and cup double and more big nights under the lights in Tallaght. To suffer such a significant injury at that moment, in a showpiece game that should have been a celebration, feels desperately cruel.

Serious knee injuries like this mean a long, lonely road back, and the recovery will test him physically and mentally. The attacking midfielder may not have had the best stint at Sincil Bank, but there he clearly possessed a lot of natural talent, that he will hope he can show off once again on the pitch.
