Past Meetings: Lincoln City vs Wycombe Wanderers

Lincoln City and Wycombe Wanderers have built an intriguing rivalry over the years, started back in the GMVC in 1987/77.

From free-flowing clashes in the mid-2000s to the fine margins of recent years, meetings between the two have rarely lacked talking points.

Recent Clashes

The most recent chapter came in the 2024/25 season, when Wycombe claimed a 1–0 win at Adams Park in March. Cameron Humphreys scored the decisive goal midway through the second half before Paudie O’Connor was sent off late on. Earlier that season, Wycombe edged a thriller at Sincil Bank, winning 3–2 in November after Lincoln had led twice. Those games were such a contrast, one a great Wycombe side, the other, a poor encounter.

In 2023/24, the sides met twice in League One. Lincoln won 3–0 at home in August, thanks to a dominant display, before drawing 1–1 away at Adams Park in January, the start of our big run. The previous campaign, 2022/23, produced one of City’s best away performances of the modern era, a 2–0 win in Buckinghamshire with goals from Dylan Duffy and a worldie from Lasse Sorensen, following a goalless draw earlier that season at Sincil Bank.

During the 2021/22 campaign, both meetings ended level and low-scoring: 1–1 at Sincil Bank and 1–0 to Wycombe in the reverse fixture. Prior to that, Wycombe had enjoyed the upper hand during the 2019/20 season, winning 3–1 at Adams Park in Danny Cowley’s final game in charge of the Imps.

Earlier Meetings

Between 2006 and 2011, the fixture became a regular in League Two, often decisive in Lincoln’s pursuit of the play-offs. The Imps recorded several strong results, including a 3–0 away win at Adams Park in April 2006, and a 1–0 home win in 2008, with goals from Mark Stallard and Lee Frecklington standing out across that period

The 2006/07 season featured another highlight, as Lincoln came from behind to win 3–1 at Wycombe thanks to Frecklington’s equaliser and a brace from Stallard. Those seasons were among the most competitive, with both sides chasing promotion to the third tier.

The first Football League meetings between the two clubs came in the 1990s, beginning with the 1993/94 campaign. Lincoln won 3–2 at Adams Park but fell 3–1 at Sincil Bank later that season. In the years since, the balance has remained fairly even, with both sides enjoying spells of dominance and several seasons spent in the same division.

Of course, the game at Sincil Bank in the GMVC was a huge one for us, as it was our last in non-league and secured promotion. In a quirk of fate, Adams Park was our first game back in the EFL in 2017.
