Our early January clash with Exeter City will now be rearranged, after the troubled Grecians ended a good week with a huge win.
The Third Round of the FA Cup is due to take place over the weekend of January 10th, and that’s when we were scheduled to make the long trip to Devon.
That now won’t happen after Exeter smashed four past hapless Wycombe Wanderers without reply at St James’ Park this afternoon. Jack Aitchinson’s brace got them going, before Akeel Higgins and Jayden Wareham finished things off. It wasn’t even an understrength Wycombe, who were unbeaten in 12 at the start of the week, but have now dropped out of two cups in four days.
It was even more pleasing for Exeter as Wycombe put bitter rivals Plymouth out of the competition in the First Round, so aside from progress, it also gives them further bragging rights over their Devon rivals.
The result means a free weekend for the Imps, with the busy Christmas period effectively concluding on January 4th, when Peterborough United visit. We’re then likely to have a fortnight off, before our trip to Kenilworth Road on January 17th.

Of course, were we to lose any games over the next month to the weather, then it does give us a free weekend, but the likelihood is we’ll have plenty of time to prepare for our first visit to Kenilworth Road since January 2018.
As for Exeter, they’ll have all eyes on the cup draw this weekend, and will be praying for a big money-spinning tie to help dig them out of the financial black hole they are currently gravitating around.
As for me (and Paul Richmond, my lift), we’ll have to weigh up the benfits of a midweek trip to devon instead!
