Former Lincoln City coach Michael Jolley has left his role as head coach of Bury, just 48 hours after being announced.

Bury confirmed the move in an official club statement, acknowledging the level of feeling generated by the appointment and the impact it had across the club.

The issue has arisen from his 2009 conviction for having sex with a 15-year-old girl. It is important to note that she told him she was 19, and the court overwhelmingly accepted, and emphasised in judgement, that Jolley would not have had sex with the girl had he not been deceived over her age

The Bury supporters were still incensed at the decision, and hours after his appointment, they began to deliver backlash on social media. In making the decision to part company with Jolley, the board said it had listened to feedback from supporters, staff, partners and players before reaching its conclusion.

“The board recognises the strength of feeling expressed in recent days by supporters, staff, partners and players, and the very real impact the Board’s decision to appoint Michael has had on individuals connected to the club.

“Assistant manager Tim Lees will continue to manage the team on an interim basis while the board undertakes a wider review of club operations.

“We will also be engaging directly with players, staff and stakeholders to listen, learn and ensure that appropriate support is available.

“Our immediate priority is the welfare of our people and the stability of the club and our community.

“We believe this step is necessary to help restore confidence, create space for reflection, and allow Bury FC to move forward in a way that reflects our values and responsibilities.

“Bury Football Club remains committed to acting with integrity, transparency and respect. Further updates will be shared when appropriate.”

Jolley, whose previous managerial roles include spells at Grimsby Town and Barrow, also issued a short statement following his departure, making clear he did not want to become a distraction to the club’s wider aims.

“I do not wish my presence to deter the board from its mission of returning the club to its rightful place in the EFL,” he said.

“I would like to wish the board, the players, and the supporters, the very best for the future, and hope the club can continue its journey back to where it belongs.”

Tim Lees will now remain in charge on an interim basis while Bury’s board conducts a broader review of club operations and considers its next steps. Further updates are expected once that process has been completed.

Jolley had a brief role as a coach during our time in the National League, but is better known for his time with Grimsby. He has also worked as a head coach in Sweden and Spain, as well as his short spell with Barrow.
