Late Agony For Lincoln United In New Year’s Day Stalemate

Lincoln United looked on course for their first win since sacking Scott Hellewell this weekend, only to be pegged back late on.

In other Lincolnshire non-league news, Gainsborough Trinity claimed a valuable local derby victory over Cleethorpes Town after a strong second-half showing at the Northolme. The opening 45 minutes offered little in the way of goalmouth action, with both sides cancelling each other out in a largely forgettable first half that ended goalless. The contest came to life after the break, and it was Trinity’s use of their bench that proved decisive.

Late Frank Mulhern replacement Sisa Tuntulwana broke the deadlock on 60 minutes, injecting momentum into the home side’s performance. As Cleethorpes pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Trinity remained composed, and another substitute, Javelle Clarke, sealed the points with eight minutes remaining. The 2-0 win sends Gainsborough Trinity supporters home in good spirits and leaves the Holy Blues sitting seventh in the table, firmly in touch with the promotion places as the season develops.

Contrasting Afternoon

It was a contrasting afternoon for Lincoln United, who began the New Year with a testing away trip to mid-table Hallam. United arrived on the back of a difficult run, having not taken a point since their 1-1 draw with Bradford Park Avenue on 13 December, and following the midweek resignation of manager Billy Heath.

Caretaker boss Dave Frecklington took charge and handed a start to Imps loanee Charlie Carlisle, a decision that paid off when Carlisle gave United the lead on 34 minutes. That advantage held until the interval, and United continued to look organised and competitive after the restart. When Elliot Dye doubled the lead late on, an impressive away win appeared to be within reach.

However, a dramatic finish saw Hallam strike twice, including an equaliser deep into stoppage time, forcing United to settle for a 2-2 draw. Despite remaining fourth from bottom, there were plenty of positives for United to take from the performance, and if they can maintain the level shown at the start of 2026, they will feel confident of pulling clear of the relegation battle.
