Gary Caldwell Returns To Wigan As Head Coach

Gary Caldwell has been re-appointed head coach of Wigan Athletic, nearly a decade after his first spell in charge.

The 43-year-old joins from Exeter City, with Wigan agreeing a compensation package to secure his services. Caldwell previously guided the Latics to the League One title in 2016 before departing five months into their subsequent Championship campaign.

A former Wigan captain who made 111 appearances for the club as a player, Caldwell returns alongside ex-Latics midfielder David Perkins, who has been appointed assistant head coach.

Wigan’s board described the move as reconnecting the club’s proud past with an ambitious future. The decision follows the dismissal of Ryan Lowe after a 6-1 defeat to Peterborough United left the club in the relegation zone.

Caldwell now faces the task of steering Wigan clear of danger and stabilising a side whose season has veered off course in recent weeks.
